The primary focus is on stretching and lengthening the connective tissues around the joints, particularly in the hips, pelvis, and lower spine. This differs from more active (yang) yoga styles that target muscles. 

Yin Yoga often incorporates props like bolsters, blankets, and blocks to support the body, allowing for greater relaxation and deeper stretches without strain. The practice is often meditative, encouraging practitioners to turn inward and observe their thoughts and sensations without judgment. What to Expect in a Yin Class

In a typical Yin Yoga class at Sierra Shanti, you can expect a serene and calming atmosphere. The class will begin with a brief centering period to help you transition from your day and prepare your mind and body. The instructor will then guide you through a series of poses, primarily on the floor, held for several minutes each. You will be encouraged to find your edge in each pose – a sensation of stretch, but never pain – and then to soften and surrender into the shape. 

The focus is on relaxation and release, rather than effort. You might notice various sensations as you hold the poses, and the instructor will guide you to simply observe them without judgment. Props will be available to help you find comfort and depth in each posture. The class will conclude with a relaxing Savasana (corpse pose), allowing your body to integrate the benefits of the practice.

Preparing for Your First Class

To make your first Yin Yoga class at Sierra Shanti as comfortable as possible, there are a few simple things you can do. Wear comfortable, loose-fitting clothing that allows for a full range of motion. It's best to practice on an empty stomach, or at least a few hours after a light meal. Bring a water bottle to stay hydrated. 

While we provide all necessary props, some students prefer to bring their own mat or a small towel for comfort. Arrive a few minutes early to introduce yourself to the instructor and let them know you're new. This gives them an opportunity to offer any specific guidance or modifications for you. Most importantly, come with an open mind and a willingness to explore. Remember that yoga is a journey, not a destination, and every class is an opportunity to learn and grow.
